# Taxes

> Collecting sales tax and finding what you collected

Itemstores calculates and collects sales tax through Stripe Tax. The Taxes
screen is Stripe's own tax tooling, so it needs a
[connected Stripe account](/help/tutorials/set-up-your-business). Until onboarding is
finished you get the Stripe onboarding card here instead. Only an owner or an
admin can open it.

## Turning tax off for a store

Tax is set per [store](/help/knowledge-base/stores), not for the business, and it is
**on** for a new store. The switch is **Collect taxes**, in the store's
**Advanced** section, and it calculates and collects tax at checkout using Stripe
Tax.

Turn it off for a store that should not be charged tax, such as one for a school
or church.

## Tax settings

Where you tell Stripe what you sell and where you are based, so it can work out
what to charge.

## Tax registrations

The places you are registered to collect tax. Tax is not collected in an area
with no registration.

  Adding a registration is a tax decision, not a technical one. Register where you
  are actually obliged to, and talk to a tax professional if you are not sure.

## Tax invoices

Your Stripe documents and account statements.

  Stripe Tax charges a fee for calculating tax. It arrives on the payout that
  covers the day it was billed, inside that payout's Fees. See
  [Payouts](/help/knowledge-base/payouts).

## Finding what you collected

The Taxes screen configures collection. To see what was collected, use the
**Reports** tab at the top of this screen, or
[Reports](/help/knowledge-base/reports) directly:

| Report  | Shows                                                           |
| ------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Tax     | Tax by jurisdiction and period, with the rate and net collected |
| Payouts | Tax and jurisdictions for the orders in each payout             |
