# Pricing rules

> Upcharges, discounts and rounding applied on top of base prices

A pricing rule adjusts prices on top of what a product already costs. Rules live
on their own tab beside Products, and each shows how many products it applies
to.

**New rule** creates one. A rule changes nothing until a product uses it. Attach
it with **Add rule** on that product's Pricing tab, or to many products at once
with the **Add pricing rules** operation in the products bulk editor. A new
business starts with a flat fee, a percent markup, a volume discount and a size
upcharge rule already made.

Every rule form previews itself against a sample product, showing **Base
pricing** above and the result below, so you can see what a rule does before
saving it.

## Rule types

| Volume discount | Discounts by order quantity |
| Matrix | Prices by artwork color count and quantity |
| Embroidery upcharge | Prices by stitch count and quantity, per location |
| FE decoration upcharge | Prices by printing method, per location |

## How several rules combine

A product can carry more than one rule, and all of them apply. They apply in the
order they sit in on the product, which you set by dragging them in the Pricing
tab. Each rule works on the price the one above it produced, so a percent markup
above a size upcharge marks up the base price, and below it marks up the
upcharged price.

Round is the exception. It always runs last, wherever you place it, so the
rounded figure is never marked up afterward.

Reordering reprices the product immediately.

## Size upcharge

Add a surcharge for each size that costs extra.

Other spellings of the same size are covered automatically, so 2XL also covers
XXL. Tall, petite, short and long sizes use the matching regular size unless you
list them, so 2XL also covers 2XLT.

<Warning>
To charge nothing for one of those, list it at \$0.00. Leaving it out means it
  inherits the regular size's upcharge.
</Warning>

Youth sizes are a different scale, not a length, so a youth XL never inherits
the adult XL upcharge. List a youth size by name to charge for it.

## Volume discount

A discount percentage per quantity tier. The first tier is typically 0%, meaning
full price, with larger quantities discounting from there.

The discount is worked out from the quantity a customer orders, so it lands at
order time rather than in the price stored on the product.

The preview prices every tier separately, so you can read what a customer
buying 36 pays against one buying 144.

## Matrix

For decoration priced by how many colors the artwork has. Quantity tiers run
down, color counts run across.

Each cell is the amount added per unit at that quantity and color count. The
product's stored price uses the first quantity tier, and an order uses the tier
matching its quantity, so a larger order picks up whatever you set lower down
the grid. A product with no artwork on it and no color count gets no upcharge at
all.

## Embroidery upcharge

A per-location fee based on stitch count and order quantity. Quantity tiers run
down, stitch counts run across.

Each cell is the amount added per location per unit, and every embroidery
location on the product is charged. Like the matrix, the stored price uses the
first quantity tier and an order uses the tier matching its quantity.

The stitch count comes from the artwork's embroidery file. An artwork without
one adds nothing, so the rule looks attached and prices nothing.

The preview says which location count and stitch count it assumed, since the
same rule prices differently against a one-location job and a three-location
one.

## FE decoration upcharge

A per-location rate for each printing method, for
[Fulfill Engine](/help/knowledge-base/settings/integrations/fulfill-engine) products. It
can only be attached to one, and each decoration location on the product adds
the rate you set for that product's own printing method, per unit.

## Round

Rounds prices up, never down, to a chosen increment: \$0.05, \$0.10, \$0.25,
\$0.50, \$0.99 or \$1.00. \$0.99 means the next price ending in .99, so \$12.34
becomes \$12.99.
